Incorporated on August 31, 1999, Sammamish ranks as the 25th largest
city in Washington State with a population of approximately 35,000.
Nestled between Issaquah to the south, Redmond to the north, and rising
from the eastern shores of Lake Sammamish, the City of Sammamish is
beginning to take shape. This suburban community-which back in 1970
was home to only 6,000 people-retains its rural look and feel. Approximately
21 miles east of Seattle and covering about 21 square miles on the East
Sammamish Plateau, the city is conveniently located within easy commuting
and shopping distance to many larger cities including Bellevue, Renton
and Seattle. All the Puget Sound region has to offer is only a short
drive away.
More than
90% of all homes are owner occupied, and less than 1% of homes are for
seasonal or recreational use. People choose to live in Sammamish because
the tree-lined streets and well-groomed neighborhoods make it an ideal
community in which to raise family. This probably accounts for the fact
that Sammamish has the highest percentage of children under the age
of 18 in King County. The Sammamish City Council has taken note of this
and declared Sammamish a "kid-safe, family-friendly community."
The area's children are well served by two distinguished districts within
the city limits-the Lake Washington School District, accommodating the
north end of the plateau, and the Issaquah School District at the southern
end.
Sammamish
is full of recreational potential including parks at Pine Lake and Beaver
Lake, East Sammamish Park, and NE Sammamish Park. Plans are currently
underway to build a skate park for the community's youth. The City has
acquired several tracts of yet undeveloped property that will eventually
provide additional recreation for its citizens. A recent waterfront
property donation along Lake Sammamish promises another unique recreational
opportunity. There are a number of other activities in the region from
antique browsing, to white water rafting as well as many world-class
golf courses such as Sahalee, which is hosting a PGA tournament in August
2002.
