July 10, 2002 - Redmond, WA - Northwest Suites Inc, for the second year, proudly sponsors the Benaroya Research Institute Triathlon at Seafair taking place Sunday, July 21, 2002, President and CEO Brenda Handley said.
"We are proud to associate with an event that raises funds to research the causes and cures of autoimmune diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, and cancer," Handley said. "We encourage everyone who is able to form their
own triathlon team or to pledge funds to support a team committed to going the distance on race day."
Handley sits on the board of directors for the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason. She said that Northwest Suites' involvement in the event is an important and visible way for the company to express its ongoing commitment to and leadership in the arena of community involvement.
Medical science is entering a remarkable time of discovery. Scientists at the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason are investigating new technologies that are dramatically changing the outlook for people with autoimmune diseases.
Race officials report that 2,000 triathlon participants are expected to sign up for the event and complete a ½ mile swim, and 12-mile bike ride, and a 3.1 mile run at Seward Park on Lake Washington in Seattle. In addition, kids aged 6-12 can compete in a 50-or 100-yard swim, 1 mile bike and 1/4 mile run. The kids' race is new this year and will take place in Seward Park, following the adult triathlon.
Volunteers are needed throughout the course, at water stations, in the transition area and more. Those interested in volunteering may contact brievents@vmresearch.org.
